March 2005, Sunnyvale, CA—At Pittcon 2005, Dionex introduced innovative new amperometric detection technologies for liquid chromatography. With the innovative ED Electrochemical Detector and Chromeleon® software, chemists can now switch waveforms during chromatograms, perform cyclic voltammetry experiments in the chromatography cell, and collect rich 3-D data that allow post-run signal optimization and compound fingerprinting. The plug-in ED Electrochemical Detector works with the new ICS-3000 Ion Chromatography Systems being introduced at Pittcon. Superior flow and temperature control deliver stable baselines and exceptional signal-to-noise ratios. The easily serviced cell features a reliable one-piece reference electrode, disposable thin-film working electrodes that never need polishing, and a torque control knob that ensures consistent cell volume and repeatable detector response.
Advances in electronics and software design permit applied waveforms to be changed during chromatograms, so different components can be detected using their optimum waveforms instead of a single compromised waveform. Optimized waveforms can be developed using cyclic voltammetry, which can now be performed without any change to the instrument or software. Signal measurements, instead of being integrated within the detector electronics, are transferred to software as a complete 3-D data set. The data is viewed in wireframe or iso-amperometric displays to study reaction characteristics of analytes. Integration periods for pulsed amperometry are easily optimized post-run without having to reinject samples.
When the ED is set to apply a voltage ramp instead of a stepped waveform, the resulting rapid-scan voltammogram gives a specific fingerprint for each compound, similar to the way a photodiode-array provides a unique spectrum for each compound. This fingerprinting capability promises to find applications in compound identification, peak purity assessment, and waveform optimization.
Chromeleon is a complete software system for chromatography automation, data analysis, and data management. Its client/server architecture allows smooth scale-up from a single workstation to a networked enterprise implementation, with no software change and no retraining. The software's integrated database quickly locates samples matching any combination of sequence, sample, or result criteria, and its Excel-compatible spreadsheet provides easy, flexible, and powerful ways to report results for individual or multiple samples. Comprehensive validation, security, electronic signature, and audit trail capabilities facilitate compliance with GLP, CGMP, and 21 CFR Part 11.
Chromeleon is a registered trademark of Dionex Corporation. Dionex products are designed and manufactured under an ISO 9001 Quality System.
