Electrolytic and chemical suppression greatly enhance sensitivity (signal-to-noise ratio) by decreasing the background conductivity of the eluent while simultaneously increasing analyte response compared with nonsuppressed ion chromatography (IC). Eluent generator cartridges are used for the electrolytic production of high-purity eluents for isocratic and gradient runs. Eluent generation prevents baseline shift, increases sensitivity, improves resolution, and ensures consistent peak integration. Dionex currently offers a range of EluGen^® cartridges for the production of hydroxide, carbonate, and methanesulfonic acid eluents.

The CRD 200 removes carbon dioxide from samples separated with hydroxide eluent. This removes the carbonate peak often observed when using sodium hydroxide.

The CRD 300 removes carbonic acid from suppressed carbonate eluents. This allows 'hydroxide-like' detection using carbonate eluent.
